Track Irregularity Located Near Lewes Train Derailment Site, Initial Report Details
Initial findings from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) confirm a track irregularity was present near the site of a freight train derailment close to Lewes, East Sussex. The incident occurred on 28 February, involving a train carrying aggregate from Chichester to Hoo Junction.
The RAIB's preliminary report specifies that an 'irregularity of the track' was discovered on the down line, adjacent to the point where the freight train partially left the rails. Three wagons from the 26-wagon service derailed, resulting in considerable disruption to services between Lewes and Seaford, and Lewes and Eastbourne.
Network Rail confirmed that repairs were necessary following the incident, which affected a Newhaven-bound service. Passengers faced cancellations and replacement bus services for several days as engineers worked to restore the line.
The RAIB's investigation will now focus on understanding the exact nature of the track defect and its precise role in the derailment. A comprehensive report, detailing the sequence of events and any contributing factors, is anticipated upon the conclusion of their inquiry. The incident did not result in any injuries.
