Epping Bell Hotel Asylum Seekers Relocated Over Fire Safety Concerns
All asylum seekers previously housed at The Bell Hotel in Epping have been moved, with only security personnel remaining on site. The Home Office stated the relocations were a "precautionary measure" necessitated by fire safety concerns, without providing further detail on the specific risks identified. This action comes after months of local demonstrations outside the hotel, which escalated to violence last summer following a resident's conviction for child sexual assault.
Council Seeks Clarity on Home Office Actions
Epping Forest District Council confirmed it was not informed in advance of the asylum seekers' removal despite "ongoing engagement" with the government. A council spokesperson indicated they are seeking "clarification from the Home Office on the details of what has happened and what their next steps will be" regarding the hotel's future.
A government spokesperson emphasised its commitment to "removing incentives drawing illegal migrants to Britain" and reiterated plans to close asylum hotels, moving individuals into "basic accommodation including ex-military sites." They asserted that the number of asylum seekers in hotels has decreased by 35% in the last year, and by 63% from its peak under the previous administration.
