France: Jérôme B. Suspected in Lyhanna Murder, Prior Allegations Unaddressed by Justice System
A national outcry has erupted in France over the presumed murder of an 11-year-old girl, Lyhanna, whose body was discovered on farmland near Fleurance after she disappeared from school in the Gers region. Jérôme B., 41, the father of a friend of Lyhanna’s, has been in custody since Monday, with witnesses placing Lyhanna in his car on the day of her disappearance.
Details of Jérôme B.’s extensive police record, released by officials, have ignited public anger and prompted a political reckoning. He had been named in four separate cases involving young girls in recent years. Two cases were closed due to insufficient evidence, and he was dismissed from a school maintenance position for “inappropriate behaviour” towards a teenager in a third instance.
However, it is the fourth allegation that has drawn the most severe criticism. The state prosecutor in Auch confirmed a complaint lodged last August by the mother of 10-year-old Rosa, alleging repeated rape by Jérôme B. Despite medical examinations substantiating Rosa’s claims, Jérôme B. was never questioned by investigators in the nine months following the report.
This systemic failure, compounded by bureaucratic delays in transferring the case between jurisdictions, has exposed profound deficiencies within the French justice system. Critics contend that authorities prioritised procedural adherence over safeguarding children, ignoring multiple warning signs about Jérôme B.’s potential to cause harm.
With presidential elections less than a year away, opposition figures have seized upon the tragedy as evidence of state laxity and incompetence. Jordan Bardella of the National Rally stated, “This terrible tragedy could have been avoided if the justice system were not so dysfunctional.” Bruno Retailleau of Les Républicains called for a complete reform, asserting, “A society that is incapable of protecting its own children is a society which will one day start turning against itself.” Marine Tondelier of the Ecologists denounced the affair as a “symbol of a politico-judicial system incapable of handling the issue of sexist and sexual violence.”
President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged “clear” failings, stating, “It is unacceptable. We cannot look Lyhanna’s family in the face and say this was properly handled.” Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin expressed horror, questioning why a man under such suspicion was not kept from young people. The Prime Minister has demanded a comprehensive report on the institutional failures within 15 days.
