Family of Professor Jason Arday Addresses 'Public Cruelty' at Vigil
Hundreds gathered in south London to commemorate Professor Jason Arday, whose family highlighted the 'public cruelty' he faced prior to his death last week. Professor Arday, a distinguished academic and author, passed away at the age of 38.
A statement from his family, read during the vigil, described him as a 'beacon of hope, inspiration, and joy' to many. They acknowledged the widespread grief following his passing but underscored their struggle to reconcile the public outpouring of affection with the 'harsh realities' of his experiences.
Professor Arday made history in 2021 by becoming one of the youngest Black professors in the UK, aged 36, at the University of Cambridge. His career trajectory included a professorship at the University of Glasgow and a senior professorship in sociology at the University of Cambridge, where he was also a Fellow at Jesus College. His research primarily focused on race, education, and social justice.
The family expressed their ongoing difficulty in processing his death, particularly the disparity between his public acclaim and the personal challenges he encountered. They stated that they are 'still coming to terms with the reality that he is no longer with us'.
