Final Deadline Nears for Glasgow Fire Recovery Fund Applications
Businesses significantly impacted by the extensive fire that ravaged a historic building on Glasgow's Union Street on 8 March face a final deadline of Sunday, 23:59, to submit applications for financial support. The Fire Recovery Fund, managed by Glasgow City Council, utilises a portion of the Scottish Government's £10 million commitment towards post-fire recovery efforts.
The blaze, which originated in a vape shop, escalated rapidly, affecting hundreds of local enterprises. Seventy-three businesses suffered the complete loss of their premises within Forsyth House, whilst numerous others have experienced considerable trade disruption due to ongoing cordons.
Support Tiers Available
Three distinct levels of support are offered, calibrated according to proximity to the incident and the severity of the impact:
- £25,000 for each of the 73 businesses whose premises were destroyed in Forsyth House.
- £15,000 for each of the 78 businesses situated within the current cordon.
- £2,000 for each of the 700 businesses initially encompassed by the wider cordon.
Over 110 applications have already been received, with an additional 50 currently in progress. Firms yet to apply are urged to do so before the approaching deadline.
Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, previously emphasised the critical importance of supporting local businesses in the aftermath of the incident. Former Finance and Local Government Secretary Shona Robison stated the funding would provide prompt financial aid, crucial for the rebuilding and renewal of the affected city area.
The fire led to the destruction of a Victorian building at the junction with Gordon Street, leaving only its façade intact. Consequently, high-level rail services at Glasgow Central train station were suspended for ten days following the incident.
