Reform UK Motion Revokes Climate Emergency Status in Basildon Council

Basildon Council has formally revoked its 'climate emergency' declaration, a status initially adopted by the previous Labour administration in 2020. The decision follows a motion tabled by the Reform UK group, which now leads the council.

Councillor Trevor Harman, leader of the Reform UK group and the council, asserted that local environmental enhancements do not necessitate the emergency label. Harman stated, "Basildon Council should focus on taking practical steps to improve our local environment for the benefit of all our residents, rather than making political statements." The motion passed with 20 votes in favour, 18 against, and one abstention.

Labour councillors criticised the move, with Councillor Andrew Ansell describing it as "unbelievable." Ansell argued that the declaration was a crucial commitment to environmental action, providing a framework for policy and resource allocation. The revocation signals a shift in approach for Basildon Council regarding its stated environmental priorities and the language used to define them.
