Finland-Sweden Rail Link Reopens, Enabling Europe's Longest Train Journey
A direct rail connection between Finland and Sweden has been re-established, the first such passenger service in decades. The new route, which runs from Tornio, Finland, to Haparanda, Sweden, allows for an unbroken rail journey from Portugal to the northern reaches of Lapland. This extensive route is now considered Europe's longest continuous train journey.
The initiative was largely driven by a Swedish entrepreneur, Martti Tenku, who operated the service during a trial period in 2023. Mr. Tenku successfully secured a contract for regular services following the trials.
The reopening of this cross-border link has broader implications for European connectivity. It provides a direct railway bridge across the Nordic region, enhancing both passenger and potential freight movement. This development underscores an ongoing European drive to bolster rail infrastructure and reduce reliance on other modes of transport, aligning with broader climate objectives.
