Firefighters Battle Thessaloniki Wildfire After One Civilian Confirmed Dead
A large-scale wildfire continues to rage near Thessaloniki, Greece, overwhelming emergency services and resulting in at least one fatality. A 64-year-old man was discovered deceased within a caravan in the Lagyna area, north-east of the city. His death marks a grim escalation in the crisis, as firefighters contend with challenging conditions.
Over 100 firefighters, supported by ground crews, a helicopter, and six water-dropping aircraft, are deployed to combat the blaze. Strong winds are exacerbating efforts, causing the fire to spread rapidly across the region. Authorities have issued evacuation orders for several localities, including the villages of Lagyna and Pefka, to safeguard residents from the encroaching flames.
The incident underscores the recurring vulnerability of Mediterranean countries to intense wildfires, a phenomenon frequently attributed to climate change. The Greek government has yet to comment on the broader implications for national infrastructure and environmental policy.
