
Former Footballer Joey Barton Denies Golf Club Assault Charge
Former Premier League footballer Joey Barton has denied assaulting a man at a Merseyside golf club, appearing via video link at Liverpool Crown Court from prison.
Plea and Charges
Barton, 43, alongside co-defendant Gary O'Grady, 50, is jointly charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent on Kevin Lynch, 51. The alleged incident occurred at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March.
Mr Lynch, a former non-league football manager, reportedly sustained serious eye injuries.
Barton, of Widnes, was remanded into custody, with his trial scheduled for seven days, commencing on 1 September. O'Grady did not enter a plea during the hearing.
Background
Earlier court proceedings indicated that the defendants had been socialising with Mr Lynch at the golf club prior to the alleged attack. Barton, who made one appearance for England, had a notable playing career with clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Burnley, and also managed Fleetwood.
