Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor Charged in Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering Probe
Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has been formally charged with multiple offences, including the illegal facilitation, importation, and sale of illicit drugs. The charges, which also encompass money laundering, were announced following an investigation into alleged criminal activities during her tenure.
Ms Howard-Taylor, who served as Vice President from 2018 to 2024, is accused of involvement in a network that exploited official channels for drug trafficking. The investigation reportedly uncovered evidence linking her to operations that moved significant quantities of controlled substances into Liberia and facilitated their distribution. The money laundering charges stem from allegations that she laundered profits derived from these illegal drug sales through various financial mechanisms.
The Attorney General, N. Oswald Tweh, confirmed the charges, emphasising the government's commitment to tackling corruption and organised crime at all levels. This development marks a notable instance of a high-ranking former official facing such serious allegations in Liberia, a nation that continues to grapple with the broader implications of transnational crime and its impact on governance and public trust. The legal proceedings are anticipated to shed further light on the extent of the alleged criminal enterprise.
