Former PE Teacher Michael Neil Receives Unpaid Work Order for Child Assaults

Michael Neil, a former physical education teacher, has been handed a community payback order requiring 240 hours of unpaid work. The 72-year-old admitted to 24 charges of assaulting children at Kerelaw Residential School and Secure Unit between 1978 and 1980.

During a hearing at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, the prosecution detailed Neil's violent conduct, which included striking pupils with golf balls, a squash racket, and wooden implements. He also admitted to punching children and forcing one to consume soap and water. Sheriff David Hall acknowledged the gravity of Neil's actions, noting that the assaults were committed against "vulnerable children in your care".

Neil, who retired from teaching in 1990, informed investigators he could not recall all the incidents due to the frequency of his assaults. The court heard that children in Kerelaw's care were primarily from troubled backgrounds, placed there due to care orders or criminal behaviour. Prosecutors revealed that victims had described Neil's actions as "sadistic" and highlighted the lasting trauma inflicted. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service expressed hope that the conviction would provide some measure of justice for the survivors.
