Suffolk Heathland Fire Stood Down from Major Incident Status by Fire Officials

The large heathland fire that devastated approximately 120 hectares of land close to Sizewell, Suffolk, has been reclassified by the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service. The incident, which necessitated the deployment of 15 fire appliances at its height, is no longer considered a major incident, though operations are continuing.

Sustained Monitoring Efforts

Chief Fire Officer Jon Norman confirmed the downgrading, explaining that while the immediate crisis response had concluded, fire crews would maintain a presence on the affected heathland. Their role is to monitor for any potential reignitions, particularly given the extensive area scorched by the blaze.

The fire, which initially prompted concerns due to its proximity to sensitive ecological areas and infrastructure, reportedly began on Thursday afternoon. Firefighters were able to bring the most active fronts under control by Friday, preventing further spread into untouched sections of the heath.

Investigations into the cause of the extensive blaze are expected to commence, though no immediate indications have been provided. The focus remains on ensuring the complete extinguishing of all hot spots to prevent a resurgence of the fire, especially as dry conditions can exacerbate such incidents.
