Former River City Actor Iain Robertson Jailed Nine Years for Five Rapes

Iain Robertson, the actor formerly associated with the Scottish soap opera 'River City', has been handed a nine-year custodial sentence following his conviction for rape and sexual assault. The 45-year-old was found guilty of five separate offences against two women, perpetrated over a fifteen-year period spanning from 2004 to 2019.

A jury at the High Court in Glasgow returned guilty verdicts on two charges of rape, two charges of sexual assault, and one charge of attempted rape. The victims provided testimony detailing the assaults, which were committed at various locations including Robertson's flat in Glasgow and an address in Edinburgh.

During the sentencing, the court heard that Robertson had been a prominent figure in Scottish television, recognised for his role as Stevie O'Hara in 'River City', as well as appearances in other productions such as 'Rab C Nesbitt' and 'Taggart'. The prosecution emphasised the severe impact of Robertson's actions on the victims, noting the prolonged period over which the assaults occurred.

Robertson's defence counsel indicated that the actor maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings and expressed an intention to appeal the conviction. However, Lady Dorrian, presiding over the case, underscored the gravity of the offences and the breach of trust involved in her sentencing remarks.
