Four Fatalities in English Channel Crossing Attempt
French authorities have confirmed the deaths of four people after a “taxi boat sinking” during an attempt to cross the English Channel. The incident unfolded off the coast of Boulogne, between the beaches of Équihen and Écault, south of Calais, on Thursday morning.
Ongoing Rescue Operation
Emergency services, including firefighters and intensive care units, were dispatched to the scene at 07:30 local time (06:30 BST). Approximately 30 individuals are currently receiving care from the emergency services, with the situation still under assessment. A press conference is anticipated shortly to provide further details.
This tragic event occurs after a period of calm weather in the Channel, which often sees an increase in crossing attempts. While small boat crossings have surged in recent years, with 41,472 arrivals in the UK in 2025, the number of crossings between 1 January and 26 March 2026 was 33% lower than the same period last year, attributed partly to more challenging weather conditions.
