Four Labour Activists Attend Court Over Alleged Croydon East Candidate Selection Rigging
Four individuals connected to the Labour Party have appeared in court following charges related to claims of manipulating a party database to secure a candidate selection. Joel Bodmer, 40, his wife Shila Bodmer, 41, former Southend councillor Gabriel Leroy, 24, and former Croydon councillor Carole Bonner, 69, attended to confirm their personal details.
Joel Bodmer, who sought selection for the Croydon East constituency, faces a charge of perverting the course of justice, specifically concerning allegations of altering phone records. The selection process for the parliamentary seat was halted in November 2023 due to alleged irregularities, with a subsequent re-run four months later that excluded Bodmer.
Shila Bodmer, Leroy, and Bonner are charged with conspiracy to commit offences under the Criminal Law Act and the Computer Misuse Act. Chief Magistrate Judge Paul Goldspring instructed all defendants to appear at Southwark Crown Court for a pre-trial hearing in June.
All four have been suspended from the Labour Party pending the outcome of an investigation. A Labour Party spokesperson stated the charges were "incredibly serious" and confirmed the party conducted an internal investigation before referring the matter to the police upon identifying potential criminal wrongdoing. Further comment was withheld due to ongoing legal proceedings.
Joel Bodmer is also a regional organiser for the trade union Unison, which confirmed he is currently on unpaid leave. Frank Ferguson of the Crown Prosecution Service's Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division previously stated that sufficient evidence justified bringing the case to court and that it was in the public interest. He reminded all parties of the defendants' right to a fair trial and cautioned against any reporting or commentary that could prejudice proceedings.
