France Arrests 1,000 People as Cost of Living Protests Descend into Urban Violence
French authorities arrested over 1,000 individuals across the country as widespread civil unrest erupted following mass demonstrations against the rising cost of living. Disorder spread through numerous cities, marked by significant looting, buildings set ablaze, and extensive property damage.
The unrest coincided with organised protests where more than 500,000 people took to the streets nationwide to voice their grievances over economic conditions. While the initial demonstrations were largely peaceful, segments of the protests rapidly devolved into violent confrontations with security forces and destructive acts against urban infrastructure.
Police units were deployed extensively to manage the escalating violence, which saw public and private property targeted. The significant number of arrests underscores the scale of the breakdown in public order experienced across France.
