Fugitive Mafia Boss Roberto Mazzarella Apprehended in Amalfi Coast Villa
Italian authorities have successfully apprehended Roberto Mazzarella, a notorious mafia boss and a key figure within Naples' Camorra organisation, at a lavish villa in Vietri sul Mare on the Amalfi Coast. Mazzarella, 48, had been at large for over a year following his escape in January last year when he was due to be arrested on murder charges.
Details of the Arrest
The Carabinieri military police confirmed the arrest, stating that Mazzarella did not resist when officers entered the property. He was reportedly with his wife and two children at the time. The operation involved numerous patrol boats positioned off the coast, with footage released by the Carabinieri showing heavily armed officers entering the villa.
Investigations revealed that Mazzarella had been residing at the property under a false identity. Authorities also recovered three luxury watches, approximately €20,000 in cash, false documents, and several mobile phones during the raid.
The Mazzarella Clan and Recent Activities
The Mazzarella clan is historically renowned for its involvement in counterfeiting operations in Naples, a city long associated with banknote forgery. This arrest follows a recent operation last month where police detained 16 individuals allegedly linked to the clan on charges of cyber fraud, highlighting the ongoing efforts by Italian law enforcement to dismantle organised crime networks.
