German Doctor Sentenced to 15 Years for Patient Murders
A German doctor working in palliative care has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of 12 women and three men. The district court in Munich found the 50-year-old doctor guilty of administering lethal doses of medication to his patients between September 2021 and July 2024. He was also issued with a lifetime ban from practising medicine.
During the trial, the prosecution detailed how the doctor used various powerful substances, including sedatives and morphine, to end the lives of those under his care. The defence argued for an acquittal, claiming that the patients’ deaths were a result of their underlying illnesses and the appropriate palliative treatments.
The court, however, concluded that the doctor had intentionally caused the deaths, noting that some patients had specifically requested assistance in ending their lives. This case highlights a disturbing pattern within the German healthcare system, where vulnerable individuals in palliative settings can become targets for such egregious acts.
