Ghanaian Politician Bernard Antwi Boasiako Sentenced 20 Years for Illegal Mining

A Ghanaian court has sentenced prominent politician Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly referred to as "Chairman Wontumi", to 20 years' imprisonment for illegal mining. The conviction, delivered on Wednesday, also included a fine exceeding $10,000 (approximately £7,450).

Boasiako, a regional chairman for Ghana's governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), was found guilty of contravening stringent regulations designed to curb widespread illicit mining, known locally as 'galamsey'. This ruling follows heightened efforts by the Ghanaian government to tackle the environmental devastation and economic losses attributed to unregulated mining operations.

The judgement has been met with significant public attention, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by Ghana in enforcing its mining laws, particularly against politically connected individuals. Critics frequently point to the perceived impunity of powerful figures in perpetuating environmental degradation for personal gain, highlighting the often-limited accountability within the country's resource extraction sector.
