Ghanaian Twin Brothers, US Woman Admit Guilt in $9 Million Romance Scam Targeting Elderly
A Ghanaian identical twin and his brother, alongside a US national, have confessed their roles in a sophisticated romance fraud operation that systematically targeted vulnerable elderly individuals across the United States and Europe. The scheme, which involved elaborate deceptions to cultivate romantic relationships before extracting substantial financial transfers, amassed over $9 million from victims.
Cassiel and Caston Ato Howard, both 37, admitted guilt to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Suzzy Ramone, 47, a US citizen, also pleaded guilty to the same charge. According to court documents, the trio and their co-conspirators fabricated online personas, engaging with victims for months or even years, building trust and emotional attachments before orchestrating requests for money under various false pretences, such as medical emergencies, business investments, or travel expenses.
US authorities detailed how the funds were laundered through a network of bank accounts, often controlled by members of the criminal enterprise, before being transferred to Ghana. The case highlights the persistent vulnerability of older populations to online financial exploitation, despite ongoing public awareness campaigns. Sentencing dates have not yet been announced.
