Glangwili Hospital Ward Closes After Rare Crusted Scabies Outbreak
A ward at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen has been closed following a confirmed outbreak of crusted scabies, a severe form of the skin condition. Public Health Wales reported the diagnosis, prompting immediate isolation procedures and rigorous contact tracing to prevent further transmission within the facility and community.
Crusted scabies, previously known as Norwegian scabies, is a highly contagious infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It manifests with thick crusts of skin containing numerous mites and eggs, making it significantly more infectious than common scabies. This rare form typically affects individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, or those with certain neurological conditions.
Hospital management stated that the affected ward will remain closed until the outbreak is effectively managed and all necessary decontamination protocols are completed. Medical staff and patients who may have been exposed are undergoing assessment and preventative treatment. The incident underscores the persistent challenges healthcare facilities face in controlling infectious diseases, particularly highly transmissible variants, amidst existing operational pressures.
