Glasgow Secondary Schools Employ Primary Teachers for Pupil Literacy Catch-Up Programme

Glasgow secondary schools have commenced an intensive literacy programme, bringing in primary school teachers to address foundational reading skill gaps among new pupils. This initiative targets children entering secondary education without basic literacy, a situation described by council officials as “very concerning”.

Around 20 primary teachers have been deployed across 20 secondary schools in Glasgow. Their role is to provide concentrated support to pupils struggling with reading, identified upon their transition from primary education.

This intervention follows a recognition that some pupils are reaching secondary school unable to read or comprehend at an appropriate level. Educational authorities in Glasgow have acknowledged this deficit, highlighting the necessity of such specialised programmes to ensure pupils can access the secondary curriculum effectively.
