Green Party Makerfield Candidate Chris Kennedy Withdraws From By-Election
Chris Kennedy, a registered nurse and children's safeguarding specialist, withdrew his candidacy for the Makerfield by-election. The Green Party confirmed his departure, stating that the decision was based on "personal and family reasons" and that they wished him well, emphasising family priorities.
The party is set to reopen nominations for a new candidate, with a decision expected by Monday. It is understood that Kennedy intends to focus on his family's caring responsibilities, a joint decision made with the party for him to step down.
The by-election in the Greater Manchester constituency, scheduled for 18 June, follows the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons. Simons stated his intention to create an opportunity for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to contest the seat and potentially return to Westminster as an MP.
Previously, Green Party leader Zack Polanski had commented on Kennedy's suitability, stating, "Chris will be a fantastic candidate and representative for Makerfield." Polanski framed the election as a contest over policies for "lower bills, warmer and more affordable homes, and a greener and fairer economy."
