Green Party MP Carla Denyer Takes Leave of Absence for Burnout Recovery
Carla Denyer, the newly elected Green Party MP for Bristol Central, is taking several weeks away from her parliamentary duties to address health concerns related to burnout. Denyer, who was elected in the 2024 general election and previously served as Green Party co-leader from 2021 to 2025, stated the decision was made on medical advice.
The MP acknowledged struggling with enduring health problems, which she found increasingly difficult to manage alongside the demanding hours and significant responsibilities of her political role. Denyer emphasised that burnout, if unmanaged, can worsen and elevate the risk of long-term health complications.
“It is an honour to represent the people of Bristol Central and I know that by stepping back for a little while now, I will ultimately be able to return as a better champion for the community that means so much to me,” Denyer stated. She expressed hope that by disclosing her personal struggles, she could contribute to reducing the stigma associated with burnout and encourage more open dialogue on the subject.
Occupational burnout, characterised by prolonged periods of intense stress, is a recognised health condition with considerable knock-on effects. Denyer’s constituency office is expected to operate as normal during her absence.
