Greggs Announces 740 Job Cuts, Four Bakery Closures in Restructuring Move

Greggs, the prominent UK bakery chain, has confirmed plans to close four of its 12 manufacturing facilities, resulting in the elimination of 740 jobs. The company indicated that the decision is a strategic imperative to "keep evolving alongside changing customer expectations" and modernise its production capabilities.

The closures will affect bakeries in Edinburgh, Twickenham, Sleaford, and Newcastle upon Tyne, with operations gradually ceasing over the next 18 months. Greggs currently employs approximately 25,000 staff across its 2,500 retail outlets and production sites nationwide.

A spokesperson for the company emphasised that the restructuring aims to create a "centre of excellence" at its remaining sites, facilitating more efficient production and distribution. Affected employees will be offered redeployment opportunities where possible, with Greggs stating it will provide support to those impacted by the job losses.
