Andrew Bailey: Regulating Artificial Intelligence Premature, Focus on Testing
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has argued that premature regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) could stifle innovation, suggesting a focus on 'rigorous' testing and the implementation of robust safeguards as the more appropriate initial step. Speaking to economists, Mr Bailey underscored the significant risks AI poses to financial markets if not properly managed.
The Governor emphasised the potential for AI to create 'unexpected and uncontrolled feedback loops' within the global financial system, necessitating a cautious approach to its integration. He called for a concentrated effort on ensuring the safety and reliability of AI applications before considering comprehensive regulatory frameworks that might hinder its developmental trajectory.
Mr Bailey’s comments align with a broader sentiment among some policymakers who prioritise understanding and mitigating the operational risks of emerging technologies over immediate, potentially restrictive, legislative actions. The long-term implications for market stability and the broader economy remain a central concern for financial authorities in the UK and beyond.
