Haunted Properties Attract UK Bargain Hunters Seeking Price Reductions
In the UK, properties with a history of death by suicide, murder, or other tragic circumstances are being snapped up by a niche market of buyers seeking substantial discounts. Estate agents confirm a notable trend where the perceived stigma of a 'haunted' house translates into tangible price reductions, attracting a specific segment of the property market.
For example, a property in Glasgow where a former resident reportedly took their own life, and is now alleged to haunt the premises, saw its price reduced by £50,000. The current occupant, who explicitly sought a bargain and claims to share the home with a spectral presence, stated, "I live with a ghost, it’s not really a big deal now." This sentiment is echoed by others who prioritise financial savings over any potential supernatural unease.
Specialist property lawyer Natalie Cosgrove explained that while there is no legal obligation to disclose a property's macabre history, estate agents often do so as a courtesy or in response to direct queries. This transparency can directly influence negotiations, with buyers frequently leveraging such disclosures for a lower purchase price. The market reveals a calculated trade-off: a willingness to accept an unconventional cohabitant for a more favourable financial arrangement.
