HMS Dragon Docks for Maintenance Amidst Middle East Tensions
HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer despatched to safeguard British air bases in Cyprus, has entered port for what the Ministry of Defence (MoD) describes as a "routine logistics stop" and a "short maintenance period." The vessel, recently arrived in the eastern Mediterranean, is addressing a minor technical issue concerning its onboard water system, though crew access to water and catering remains unaffected.
An MoD spokesperson confirmed that HMS Dragon will maintain a "very high level of readiness" throughout this period, capable of sailing at short notice. The warship, one of the Royal Navy's most advanced, was deployed from Portsmouth on 10th March to protect RAF Akrotiri, which had experienced an Iranian-made drone attack earlier that month.
The deployment and subsequent maintenance occur amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East. The UK government has faced scrutiny regarding its response to the situation. Meanwhile, in an operational update, the MoD confirmed that RAF Regiment gunners downed an Iranian drone and that two additional Merlin Crowsnest helicopters have arrived in Cyprus, enhancing airborne surveillance capabilities. UK Typhoons and F-35 jets continue defensive missions in the region.
Concerns also persist over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route, with the threat of Iranian attacks on vessels impacting oil prices. The UK is set to host a multinational military planning conference to discuss the Strait and explore measures for an international coalition once hostilities cease.
