HMV to Vacate Oxford Street Flagship Store After Three Years, Citing Unviable Location
Music and entertainment retailer HMV is set to close its flagship Oxford Street store in January 2024, less than three years after reopening on the prominent London thoroughfare. The company has stated that the current location has proven 'unviable' for its long-term operations.
HMV returned to 363 Oxford Street in July 2020, aiming to capitalise on its heritage in a prime retail district. However, the store's performance at this particular address has evidently fallen short of expectations, leading to the decision to cease trading at the site. The move underscores the persistent challenges faced by high street retailers in maintaining profitability in central London.
Despite the closure, HMV has confirmed its intention to retain a presence in London's West End. A spokesperson indicated that the company is actively seeking a new, more sustainable location within the area to continue serving its customer base. This strategy suggests a recognition of the value of a physical presence in the capital's entertainment and shopping heartland, albeit with a more pragmatic approach to property costs and footfall dynamics.
