Hong Kong Activist Joshua Wong Receives Ten-Year Prison Sentence Under Security Law
Joshua Wong, a central figure in Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, has been handed a ten-year prison sentence. The 30-year-old activist was prosecuted under the National Security Law, a sweeping piece of legislation imposed by Beijing in 2020.
Wong is among hundreds of individuals detained since the law's implementation, which critics argue has systematically curtailed Hong Kong's autonomy and civil liberties. The legislation criminalises secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces, with penalties ranging up to life imprisonment.
International human rights organisations have consistently condemned the law, asserting that it is used to suppress dissent and target political opposition. The extensive use of the legislation has effectively dismantled much of Hong Kong's once-vibrant pro-democracy landscape, with many activists either imprisoned or forced into exile.
