Twenty-six initial locations in England and Wales have been identified for the 'pounds for pylons' scheme, which offers an annual £250 reduction on electricity bills. This discount applies to properties situated within 400 metres of newly constructed or upgraded electricity transmission pylons and substations.
The initiative, part of a wider package of measures, seeks to compensate communities directly affected by the significant infrastructure development required for the UK's energy grid modernisation. While the energy regulator Ofgem previously approved the framework, the precise locations for the initial rollout have now been disclosed. Households near these sites will see the £250 saving applied directly to their bills, effectively covering a portion of their energy costs.
National Grid, the primary operator of the high-voltage transmission network, is undertaking extensive projects across the country, including the construction of hundreds of miles of new overhead lines and underground cables.
