Hundreds of Thousands Await GCSE and BTec Results; New App Delivers Grades to 750 English Schools
Hundreds of thousands of students across England are preparing to receive their GCSE and BTec results today. For the first time, a new application will facilitate the delivery of grades directly to students' mobile devices across 750 schools, becoming accessible from 11:00 BST.
Ofqual, the examinations regulator, has indicated a policy of leniency in grading this year's results. This approach aims to compensate for the significant educational upheaval experienced by students during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a degree of fairness in the evaluation process. Consequently, the proportion of top grades awarded is anticipated to be higher than pre-pandemic levels.
This year's cohort is the last to benefit from these adjusted grading standards. From next year, grading is expected to revert to pre-2020 frameworks, potentially leading to a more competitive landscape for higher grades.
In 2023, approximately 68.2% of GCSE entries received a grade 4 or above, considered a 'pass'. This figure represented a decline from 73.2% in 2022 but remained notably higher than the 67.3% recorded in 2019, prior to the pandemic. The forthcoming results will provide further insight into the long-term impact of these policy adjustments on educational outcomes.
