India-Africa Forum Summit Postponed Over Ebola Outbreak in Congo and Uganda
The India-Africa Forum Summit, intended to foster diplomatic relations between India and African nations, has been cancelled. The fourth iteration of the event was set to convene in Delhi from 28-31 May, marking its return after more than a decade.
India and the African Union released a joint statement on Thursday, confirming the postponement due to the "emerging public health situation in the continent". A new date for the summit is yet to be announced.
This decision aligns with the World Health Organisation (WHO) designating the current Ebola outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern. The WHO reports 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths, predominantly confined to the African continent.
Experts highlight the particular challenge posed by this outbreak, as it involves a rare Ebola species for which no vaccine currently exists, compounded by the epicentre being located within a conflict zone. Ebola, a virulent disease transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, can manifest symptoms between two and 21 days after exposure, starting with flu-like signs and potentially progressing to organ failure and haemorrhage.
Although India has not reported any domestic Ebola cases, the Directorate General of Health Services issued a health advisory for passengers arriving from or transiting through Ebola-affected countries. Travellers were instructed to report to airport health authorities immediately and seek medical attention within 21 days if they develop symptoms or have had direct contact with infected individuals.
