Indian Pilgrim Missing After Flash Floods Hit Tibet, Hundreds Await News
Hundreds of families in India are enduring an anxious wait for news of relatives after flash floods devastated parts of Tibet. Among them is the family of a woman from Uttarakhand, whose pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a revered site for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, was cut short by the natural disaster. Her last communication was a WhatsApp message indicating she was about to enter Tibet.
The region experienced heavy rainfall on 12th July, triggering flash floods that have led to significant disruption and numerous disappearances. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on 15th July that they are actively monitoring the situation and are in contact with Chinese authorities to ascertain the well-being of Indian citizens. However, reliable information has been scarce, leaving many families in prolonged uncertainty.
Mount Kailash, located in the Gangdise Mountains of the Tibetan Plateau, attracts thousands of pilgrims annually. The area is remote, and infrastructure is often rudimentary, making rescue and communication efforts challenging in the wake of such events. Families have highlighted the difficulty in obtaining concrete information, with official channels providing limited specifics on the scale of casualties or the status of those unaccounted for.
