Indian Police Charge Husband, Mother-in-Law in Twisha Sharma's Death
Mumbai police have filed charges against the husband and mother-in-law of Indian model and actor Twisha Sharma, following her death in May. Sharma, who had been married for only five months, was found deceased in what authorities are now investigating as a suspicious circumstance.
Her husband, Himanshu Singh, and mother-in-law, Puja Singh, face charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to dowry deaths and cruelty by husband or relatives. The investigation focuses on allegations of harassment and demands for dowry leading up to Sharma’s death.
Dowry-related violence remains a significant issue in India, despite laws prohibiting the practice. Such incidents often involve newly married women facing pressure and abuse from in-laws over dowry payments, which can tragically escalate to death. Human rights organisations have consistently documented the systemic challenges in prosecuting these cases effectively.
