India's Avocado Consumption Soars, Domestic Growers Target Market Expansion
Once a niche import, the avocado is experiencing a significant surge in popularity across India. This escalating demand, particularly among affluent urban consumers, has prompted domestic agricultural initiatives aimed at increasing local production and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
Historically, India's avocado market has been marginal, with limited cultivation and high prices sustained by imports. However, changing dietary preferences and increased awareness of the fruit's nutritional value have transformed its status, leading to a substantial uplift in consumption over recent years.
Local growers are now investing in expanding avocado orchards, particularly in southern states where climatic conditions are favourable. This strategic shift seeks to capitalise on the lucrative market, which has previously been dominated by imports from countries such as Tanzania, New Zealand, and Peru. Industry analysts anticipate that increased domestic supply will eventually stabilise prices, making avocados more accessible to a broader consumer base and further entrenching their position in the Indian diet.
