Kenyan Family Protest Three-Year Extradition Hearing Delay for Ex-British Soldier Accused of Murder
Relatives of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan woman murdered in 2012, have expressed outrage over the unexpected three-year delay in an extradition hearing for a former British soldier accused of her killing. The hearing, originally set for next month, has been rescheduled for May 2027, with no official explanation provided.
Ms Wanjiru's body was discovered in a septic tank at a Nanyuki hotel, hours after she was last seen with British soldiers. A Kenyan inquest in 2019 concluded she was murdered by a British soldier, leading to a decade-long pursuit of justice.
The protracted legal process has drawn international scrutiny, highlighting the persistent challenges in holding Western military personnel accountable for alleged crimes committed abroad. Human rights organisations have consistently criticised the lack of transparency and the slow pace of investigations, particularly concerning British forces stationed in Kenya. The delayed hearing reinforces cynicism about genuine commitment to justice, particularly when it impacts the political and military relationships underpinning UK interests in the region.
