
Intelligence Committee Accuses Government of Withholding Mandelson Appointment Documents From MPs
The Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) has accused the government of withholding crucial documents pertaining to Lord Mandelson's appointment as the UK's ambassador to the United States. Lord Beamish, the committee's chair, confirmed that a vetting file from UK Security Vetting (UKSV) is among the material being kept from Members of Parliament.
Lord Beamish stated that while the government might possess reasons to redact some information, it lacks the authority to unilaterally withhold documents and should seek parliamentary approval for such actions. This comes after MPs utilised a 'humble address' in February to compel the government to publish all papers concerning the appointment. The government initially resisted, citing national security and diplomatic concerns, but later agreed to send sensitive documents to the ISC for review.
The ISC has now completed its review of 337 documents referred to it, making decisions on all requested redactions. However, Lord Beamish raised several concerns regarding the government's response to the humble address, specifically highlighting the withholding of documents and excessively broad redactions, particularly concerning personal information.
Lord Beamish also criticised the extensive use of unofficial communication systems, such as WhatsApp, by senior officials and ministers for conducting government business. He described this practice as creating an unacceptable
