Intelligence Committee Reports Government Withholding Documents on Lord Mandelson Appointment
The government is withholding certain documents concerning Lord Mandelson’s appointment as the UK’s ambassador to the United States, according to the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC).
Lord Beamish, chair of the ISC, stated that Lord Mandelson's vetting file was among the documents being withheld. While acknowledging the government might have legitimate reasons to retain some material, he stressed they lack the authority to do so without parliamentary approval.
This revelation follows a February parliamentary vote that, through a ‘humble address’ procedure, compelled the government to publish all papers related to the controversial appointment. The government initially resisted, citing national security and diplomatic concerns, but later agreed to refer sensitive documents to the ISC for review.
Lord Beamish expressed concerns that documents were being redacted
