Interpol Operation Identifies 2,070 Human Trafficking Victims, Arrests 1,000 Suspects
A recent international operation targeting human trafficking has resulted in over 1,000 arrests across 76 countries. Interpol, the international police organisation, spearheaded the initiative, which identified 2,070 individuals as victims or potential victims of trafficking.
Sexual Exploitation Predominates
The vast majority of those identified as victims were women, subjected to sexual exploitation. This pattern underscores the pervasive nature of sex trafficking within global criminal networks.
International Cooperation
The operation, named “Weka”, involved a synchronised effort from law enforcement agencies worldwide, demonstrating the scale of organised crime in this area. While official statements frequently frame such operations as humanitarian efforts, the material reality is that these large-scale cross-border criminal enterprises often thrive where state oversight is weak, generating substantial illicit profits for those involved.
Interpol did not provide specific details regarding the nationalities of those arrested or the precise locations of the identified victims, beyond a general geographic spread. The focus remains on the overall figures of arrests and victim identification.
