Royal Air Force Typhoons Intercept Russian Surveillance Aircraft Over Norwegian Sea
Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 Coot A electronic surveillance aircraft operating in international airspace near NATO’s area of interest over the Norwegian Sea. The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) characterised the Russian aircraft’s behaviour as “unsafe” and “unprofessional”.
This incident marks the third such interception of Russian military aircraft by RAF planes in recent weeks. The MoD stated that the Russian craft was not communicating with air traffic control, creating a potential hazard to other air users. The Typhoons, launched from RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland, maintained a visual presence on the Russian aircraft.
The MoD highlighted that such Russian military activity, particularly in international airspace close to NATO member states, is a consistent feature of Moscow’s operations. Western military analysts frequently interpret these manoeuvres as calculated probes of NATO’s air defence capabilities and readiness, often occurring in strategically sensitive areas linked to energy and maritime security interests.
