Irish Dancer Amie Donaghey Receives Criminal Conviction Over Fake Car Insurance Scam
Amie Donaghey, a 21-year-old world champion Irish dancer, has been convicted after falling victim to a 'ghost broker' scam. She believed she had secured legitimate car insurance for £700 through a social media advertisement, a significant discount compared to the £4,500 quotes from traditional insurers.
The deception became apparent when Donaghey was stopped by police in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, and informed she was uninsured. Her lawyer, Derwin Harvey, argued that she was a victim of crime and questioned the public interest in prosecuting individuals in such circumstances, particularly when clear evidence of victimisation exists.
On 8 May, Londonderry Magistrates' Court imposed no penalty due to the case's specific circumstances, with the district judge opting against punishment after a guilty plea was entered. Donaghey's father's bank subsequently reimbursed the money paid to the bogus broker.
City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department states that ghost brokering is increasingly prevalent, with criminals utilising social media to promote fake policies. Aviva, a major insurer, reports a year-on-year increase of over 4% in ghost brokering, targeting drivers aged 17-25. One suspected broker detected by Aviva reportedly made around £150,000 selling these fraudulent policies.
Motorists are advised to verify the legitimacy of insurance providers through the Financial Conduct Authority website and to be sceptical of deals appearing 'too good to be true'.
