Irish President Signs Jennie's Law, Mandating Fatal Accident Inquiries

Ireland's President has given formal assent to 'Jennie's Law', marking its enactment after passage through the Dáil. This legislative change mandates an official inquiry into fatal accidents where a body has not been recovered, providing a framework for justice for families.

The law is named in remembrance of Jennie Poole, a 24-year-old mother of two, who was murdered in 2021 by her former partner, Gavin Barry. Despite Barry's conviction for her murder, Poole's body has never been located.

Jennie's sister, Stacey Poole, has been a central figure in campaigning for the law, articulating the profound impact of not recovering her sister's remains. The new legislation is intended to ensure that no other family endures similar uncertainty, compelling state authorities to conduct a full investigation into such disappearances even in the absence of physical evidence.
