Jaguar Launches First Electric Car After Two Years of Brand Repositioning
Jaguar has officially launched its inaugural electric vehicle, two years after a contentious brand overhaul by parent company Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sparked significant debate and accusations of ‘wokeness’ within the automotive sector.
The company's strategic repositioning, initiated in 2021, involved a substantial shift away from traditional models and a stated intent to focus on a high-luxury, low-volume electric future. This direction, championed by JLR's then-CEO Thierry Bolloré, was met with scepticism from some quarters, particularly regarding the perceived abandonment of Jaguar's heritage in favour of a more abstract, 'modern luxury' identity.
Critics had argued that the rhetoric surrounding the brand's revitalisation was overly abstract, leading to a period where the actual product strategy remained opaque. The delay in unveiling a new vehicle following the initial announcement further fuelled speculation about the viability of the ambitious plans.
The new EV represents the first tangible outcome of this significant investment and strategic pivot. Its success will be crucial for JLR as it seeks to validate its vision and reclaim market share in the increasingly competitive luxury electric vehicle segment, moving beyond the initial controversy that shadowed its re-emergence.
