Jenrick Demands Prime Minister Burnham Exclude Tax Rises for Social Care Reform Funding

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick has publicly challenged Prime Minister Burnham, insisting that he definitively rule out any tax increases intended to fund the upcoming social care reforms. Mr Jenrick stated it would be a "mistake" to pursue such a funding mechanism, advocating instead for the government to "live within its means" and prioritise the careful management of public finances.

Prime Minister Burnham has consistently avoided committing to or ruling out specific funding sources for the social care sector's long-awaited overhaul. He has maintained that no final decisions regarding the financing of these reforms have yet been made.

The government's proposals for addressing the long-standing challenges within social care are expected to be unveiled later this year. The sector has grappled with chronic underfunding and increasing demand, a situation exacerbated by the pandemic, which further strained its already stretched resources.
