John Healey Quits as Defence Secretary Over Military Spending Shortfall
John Healey has resigned from his post as Defence Secretary, expressing significant concerns over the proposed funding for the UK's defence investment plan (DIP). In his resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Healey stated that the financial settlement for the DIP “falls well short of what is required for defence and the country at this dangerous time.”
Healey directly criticised both Sir Keir Starmer and the Treasury, asserting that Starmer was “unable” and the Treasury “unwilling” to commit the necessary resources to national defence given the current threat landscape. The DIP is intended to outline funding for new equipment and defence infrastructure over the next decade, following a military capabilities review last year.
Healey highlighted increased defence demands since January, specifically citing the protracted conflict in the Middle East and new UK commitments in the Arctic and Ukraine. He received the DIP's financial settlement on Monday but raised objections that additional support is “backloaded when the pressure of operations and imperative to speed up readiness to fight is in the first two years.”
The DIP's publication was initially anticipated in the autumn. Unions and defence companies have consistently warned that the continued delay to this crucial blueprint jeopardises British jobs, specialised skills, and national security.
