John Lee Receives Suspended Sentence After Llanrwst Dashcam Assault on Motorist, Family Present
A man was captured on his own dashcam footage punching another motorist into unconsciousness during a road rage incident in Llanrwst, Conwy. John Lee, 37, of Cae Tyddyn, Llanrwst, admitted actual bodily harm and was sentenced on 21 April to an eight-month prison term, suspended for 12 months.
Caernarfon Crown Court reviewed the footage, which showed Lee exiting his vehicle and confronting the victim, who had stopped his car abruptly in June due to a perceived mechanical issue. Lee shouted, "what are you doing?" before delivering a blow that rendered the victim unconscious, witnessed by the victim's wife, children, and elderly parents.
Prosecutor Rabia Tariq detailed how Lee also directed verbal aggression towards the victim's wife, who had exited the car. The victim sustained a bruised eye socket and grazed eyelid, later reporting increased forgetfulness and significant emotional impact on his family.
Defence counsel described the assault as an "isolated" incident, noting Lee's struggles with mental health following a military career cut short by injury. Lee, a self-employed carpenter, had also established a mental health football team. His only prior conviction was a common assault referral in 2005.
Judge Nicola Jones highlighted the serious nature of the assault, particularly its occurrence in front of the victim's family, and criticised Lee's aggression towards the victim's wife. In addition to the suspended sentence, Lee must complete 10 rehabilitation days and pay GBP#500 in compensation, alongside a statutory surcharge.
