John Siddell Jailed 15 Years for Child Abuse After Faking Disability to Evade Justice
A child abuser who attempted to circumvent justice by feigning a severe disability has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. John Siddell, 41, sexually assaulted three boys in Leicestershire between 2018 and 2021. Initially, his brother, James Siddell, 44, informed police that John was unable to walk or speak, leading to medical assessments that deemed him unfit to stand trial.
Deception Uncovered
Despite being found guilty in a fact-finding hearing in March 2024, John Siddell was subsequently observed on nights out at a social club, including watching an Elvis Presley tribute act and a Newcastle United football match. These sightings directly contradicted earlier psychiatric reports and his presented condition.
In September, John Siddell admitted to 15 counts of child sex abuse. Both brothers pleaded guilty to one count of perverting the course of justice. They were sentenced in their absence at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday. John Siddell received a 15-year prison sentence with an extended licence period of two years. James Siddell, described by Judge Keith Raynor as a "conman", was sentenced to two years and nine months for his role in maintaining the elaborate charade.
Judge Raynor highlighted John Siddell's extensive deception, stating: "He misled hospital staff, custody staff, arresting officers, he misled his own lawyers. He's misled staff at this court; he has misled me at a previous court hearing."
Victim Impact and Brother's Role
The court heard that two psychiatric reports initially determined John Siddell was unfit to plead, based on his appearance in a wheelchair and his apparent muteness, with his brother speaking on his behalf. This led to a judge ruling him unfit for trial.
Prosecutor Claudia James stated that despite the exposure of their deceit, the brothers "continued to live the lie together and attempt to delay and avoid hearings." She added that James Siddell played an active role in supporting his brother's façade and encouraging the pretence.
The eldest victim, then 14, disclosed the abuse to his mother, leading to further reports from two other boys, the youngest of whom was four at the time of the offences. Victims spoke of being "scared" and one described becoming emotionally unstable, experiencing nightmares, and spending most days in their bedroom.
Evidence of the deception included James Siddell providing a police statement in July 2021, claiming his brother had "limited mobility" and "could not have committed those offences as alleged due to his disabilities." Further attempts to avoid court dates included James requesting a GP letter in February 2023, the same day John was seen socialising. CCTV footage later captured John Siddell walking outside his property and inside his cell after an arrest, despite continuing to feign immobility and muteness to authorities.
