Kano Man Jailed Two Weeks for Storing Human Faeces Outside Residential Property
A Nigerian man, Mohammed Saidu, has been sentenced to two weeks in prison and fined NGN#100,000 (approximately £55) in Kano after residents complained about his storage of human faeces outside his property.
Magistrate Halima Wali ordered Saidu's detention and fine, describing his conduct as "highly inconsiderate and a threat to his neighbours' health". Saidu, whose occupation involves emptying septic tanks, is understood to have been selling the waste to local farmers for use as fertiliser, a practice prevalent but rarely openly acknowledged in the region.
Local chief Musa Abdullahi reported an initial complaint concerning "close to 50 bags of faeces". Neighbours, including Samaila Inuwa, stated they first attempted to resolve the issue privately with Saidu, who failed to cease the practice.
Saidu pleaded guilty to the charge of endangering public health. Magistrate Wali conducted a property visit before delivering her ruling, subsequently ordering Saidu to clear all waste and pledge against future recurrence of the offence. Inuwa confirmed an immediate improvement in local living conditions following the court's intervention.
