Keir Starmer Misled Public on Defence Spending Figures, Statistics Authority Rules

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, made a misleading statement concerning increased defence expenditure, according to a ruling by the UK Statistics Authority. The independent watchdog confirmed that Mr Starmer's assertion, suggesting an extra £270 billion had been committed to defence, was incorrect.

The same erroneous claim was also repeated by the Wales Office and the Ministry of Defence. Sir Robert Chote, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, wrote to Labour to clarify the figures. He stated that the £270 billion figure represents the total forecast defence budget for the period of 2020-2030, rather than a new, additional investment.

Labour had previously stated that an additional £270 billion was being spent on "new equipment for our armed forces and cyber capabilities". This phrasing, along with similar statements from government departments, has been deemed inaccurate by the Authority. The clarification underscores a consistent pattern of political figures and government bodies failing to accurately represent public spending data, an issue frequently highlighted by independent oversight bodies.
